The thinner the lines the lower the number must be in the contact by pixels box and vice versa?

Hi, I tried using this tutorial, however as soon as I go to save my image as a bitmap or jpg or something the masked stuff disappears. how do I stop this from happening?

Save it as PSD, the alpha channel only works on PNG, or anything that can handle transparencies. JPG or Bitmap will flatten the image and will give you the default white/black background.

Hello?
Please tell me the exact function of mask.
In Step 5, you are coloring grey into the selection, and none of it appears on the final?

The exact function of a mask is to hide everything but the selected area. In this tutorial, the artist has applied the mask to the area surrounding his character. So, basically, everything but the character is covered, so none of the paint that goes outside the lines shows up. He's also painted white in step 5 to illustrate this effect and to show where the colors go. You can paint it whatever colors you want in that layer, or (if you're lazy like me) you can make separate masks for the hair, skin, eyes, and whatever else so painting it requires minimal effort.
Hope that helps. :3

Uhm, the exact function of the meaning you can google it because I do not have that explination. In layman's terms, it's just a simple hide/show method. In step 5, I'm coloring with white, not gray. As you can see from step 1... my background was always gray.

I followed this down to the last detail and I'm still having trouble... When I go to start colouring it, it still goes outside of the lines and it also won't let me colour with the colours I choose on the layer with the mask. (The mask is also on the same layer as the outline.)

I have PS cs4, if that helps anything.

Okay, is it possible for you to take a screenshot of your photoshop layer window? if so I can tell what the problem is.

Okay there is your issue.

Notice that in my tutorial I have the alpha channel on a folder below the outline layer. Right now the only way you can paint behind it is on that layer itself.

All you have to do is create a folder. Click and Drag the alpha layer to the folder, and click and drag the folder below your outline. Then create layers within that folder and color away, that should do the trick. c:

I just don't know how to make it have an alpha channel. I know how to do that in GIMP but not PS.

Here it is as a JPEG though.

[link] See this is how it should look.

And here is the PSD. Look at the order that I have the layers in.

I hope this helps, I mean the tutorial is self explanitory, I have it circle the button you have to click to make it an alpha. Maybe the PSD will help.
